"One room was filled with large canvases bathed with the gentle bustle of koi enjoying clear, lush ponds, while the other [room] showcased portraits of struggle done in bolder colors...an approch inspired by the Mexican Modernists like Frida Kahlo."

Artist Statement

My art reflects my life. Many things impact me and compel me to paint. I maintain certain dogmatic principles in my work. These principles include a necessity to record and preserve the world around me. They also include a compulsion for the technical aspects of the medium, a requirement that color excite the eye, and an obligation to paint my reality.

Nishikigoi

The Koi series explores the qualities of reflection, serenity and the effects of motion. The saturated color and movement endow each painting with intensity. I use motion to imply an energy and space beyond the boundaries of the canvas. The underlying strength in the series are in it's subtleties, characterized by the rippled rings of water, the harmonious navigation of each koi relative to it's neighbor, and in the carp themselves, which are of the same species and yet all uniquely distinct.

Excessism

Excessism is my reaction to the customary ending place for waste. It is a style of artwork that is instinctively produced by he superabundance of paint from another artwork. My planned works give birth to excessism quadruplets and quintuplets, each unique and spontaneous. I transform something that was once considered valueless as excess into meaningful examples of the possibilities still available in a wasteful society.
